To PCT mile 2302 (stats here).
I woke up all along the night but still slept pretty good. The biggest reason for waking up is still that the foam mattress is not soft enough and I need to adjust my position. For the next hiking trip I am definitely going for an air mattress.
I got up 7am. Nobody was in a hurry to get moving from the Kracker Barrel camp. The store opened 7am and soon was full of hikers getting a warm breakfast. I was able to get a vegetarian burrito and a coffee. I had until 10:30am or 11:30am when the post should be delivered, so I planned to use that time to catch up with the blog. This time there were not that much stuff to write. The rest of the time went with socialising with hikers. I also decided to ask Mikko to send in my puff jacket, rain pants, beanie and gloves. A little late, but maybe they still come in handy. I also ordered a tent from Zpacks as they replied to my query that they have an exhibition sample available with a zero leadup time. I hope that the order goes through as I am never gonna be happy with the tarp.
More hikers came in during the morning. Bible and Bearcan had hiked the Knives Edge during the morning and the visibility was as bad as when I did it the previous day, they said. I saw some pictures from the area with good visibility and I am sad I was not able to witness the views.
As usual, the post delivery was late, coming in around 12pm. But luckily my shoes were there. Staying put so long had the effect that I did not feel an urge to get moving. That is the trouble with getting in towns, you become lazy and minutes grow into hours. The possibility to do little things and eat food that does not affect your rations takes over. I took the possibility to eat the vegetarian chili that the trail angel Sobo Hobo had made.
I headed out towards the trailhead 4:30pm. The weather was kind of good for hiking, cool and cloudy, but there was a strong possibility of rain and for the temperature to get a lot colder during the evening. I could not utilise my hiking poles as my fingers were already numb. Once again, I cursed myself of eating too much as the hiking was troublesome.
I had not thought about the mileage for the day properly which was kind of a mistake as it affected the starting time. In my mind, I was planning to get to Snoqualmie Pass on Tuesday, but that would have meant that I needed to do at least 15 miles. I ended up doing only 7, as the evening was approaching and I wanted to get a good camp site and setup my tarp properly for the possible rain.
I setup my camp next to a small lake. Soon after, a group of 7 hikers joined me. There were few familiar and nice hikers, but I was a bit irritated because obviously they socialised loudly. As it was already quite cold, I did not feel like participating but withdrew into my sleeping bag and only had few protein bars for dinner.

X-Static went all the way to Packwood just to get suspenders. Ah, style, first and foremost. |
