To PCT mile 1613.7 (stats here).
The night was ok. I was a bit disoriented about where I was when waking up. Partly because there were no trees and I had some weird dreams that I do not recall. I got up 6am and headed to eat some granola while catching up with the blog. Nemo soon joined me and one by one the hikers woke up.
It took me quite a lot of effort to avoid socialising but I managed to catch up with the blog and with Instagram. We agreed with the caretaker of the place, Lionheart, that she could give us a ride back to the trail head 3pm. I figured I could do a quick run to the grocery store before this and have some lunch and buy some protein bars for the trail. I would not necessarily need to resupply as Seiad Valley was only some 70 miles ahead.
At the groceries I was surprised as I ended up spending more than 40 dollars. I should stop buying tortillas as you end up buying all kinds of fillings to them as well. Protein bars are also expensive in these small towns. Once I got back to the hostel, I prepared half of the tortillas with beans, cheese and beanut butter. Eating all that made me too full. Thought about hiking in the days full heat felt really unappealing.
We were at the trailhead a bit before 4pm. Nemo and Bandit disappeared quickly and I concentrated on just moving forward. Having clean clothes has the disadvantage that you feel that they are clean and would want them to stay that way. Fat chance. While still in the car, the group was talking that it would be nice to get to this one lake at the end of the day. It was 14 miles and mostly uphill. I thought this would be totally undoable for me, with all the food slowing me down.
As the food started to melt in my stomach, I thought I could make it to the lake after all, although arriving late. Still, it would be nice to dip in before getting to bed. It was some 3 miles before the lake that I stumbled into Bandit, Nemo and Popcorn. They had set camp on a place with a nice view for a sunset. I would have joined them but had no water for camping. So I continued to the lake. I was there 9:30pm and it was dark already. Ideas about dipping in vanished, especially as the lake was more like a pond and seemed muddy. I set up my tarp as the weather forecast warned about a thunderstorm. I was happy that I was able to set it up relatively well. After all, the last that I set it up was just after South Lake Tahoe.
Before getting sleep, I heard some noises. I thought if that would be a bear. It turned out to be my stomach. It apparently was not happy about my decision to skip dinner. I was still feeling the days eating so I was not in a mood to do any more.
