To PCT mile 1925.1 (stats here).
The night was somewhat cold and I delayed getting out of the sleeping bag. Finally I got up 5:30am and was underway 6:15am. Other people at the site were still asleep and I enjoyed the sunrise while having an energy bar. I employed both my windjacket and pants because of the chilliness. This has not happened in a long time.
The days goal was to get quickly to Shelter Cove, get a resupply package from there, then catch up with the blog and continue the hiking. It was less than 10 miles so I was hoping to get there before 10am and get out at around noon. I managed to arrive 9:30am. The place was full of campers with huge caravans and also some PCT hikers. Aston was there with his friends. He would hike with them for three days and thus having a lot slower pace than usual.
Soon lot of familiar hiker faces arrived at the resort. Butterfly, Smiley Man, Birdman, Old Timer and others. Almost everybody had taken the shortcut route. Lots of hikers meant lots of socialising and I failed miserably in updating my blog. I did send messages to friends and family. My NAB traveller credit was not accepted at the place for some reason and I spent some time checking out online if there were any funds left. There were.
At Shelter Cove, I bought a real hot chocolate, a soda and some chocolate for the trail. In addition, I ate some good stuff found from the hiker box. Eventually, I ended up spending more time than I would have wanted and left not until 1:15pm. I got a lift from the parking lot and saved a mile of walking. As this was a back and forth sidetrail, it did not destroy my continuous footpath approach. As I was a bit full of the eating, my pace was nowhere near what it was in the morning.
The surroundings today were nice. Lots of lakes and ponds. I had a distant goal to get to camp at Chester Lake, which was supposed to be a really nice camping spot. With my pace, I did not think I would make it. At my 6 hour break, I took my chocolate coffee mix, and felt envigorated. My pace increased and I decided to push it to get to the lake, even though I would be there so late that I would not dare to swim anymore. At 8pm, I was there. As expected, it was full of people. I was surprised to see Butterfly there as well. He told me that my decision inspired him so he wanted to be at the lake as well.
The camp site was great. I did wash my feet and face, and did some massaging and stretching while looking over the lake, the night setting in. It was pretty late when I went to sleep but overall the evening was good.
