2018.07.15 - Day #66 - Lighting and ranching

To PCT mile 1409.7 (stats here).

I got up 3am when the lightning illuminated the sky. The thunder soon followed. I was camping in a spot where there was no possibility to pitch my tarp, and I had not secured my stuff for rain. I got up quickly and started to put my stuff together. There where multiple lightnings and you could see a mass of dark storm clouds, but not really where they were going. At least it was not raining immediately.

The clouds receding to distance.

I got moving in the dark in under 20 minutes. It started to rain a bit, and for the first time on the trail I actually got wet. It did not rain hard, and it seemed that the two storm fronts were moving away from me.

After two hours of hiking it seemed that the raining was over and the clouds going away. I decided to take my usual break. At the same time Bandit, Popcorn and Skywalker appeared. They had purposefully started hiking at 3am in order to make it to the ranch before the world cup final in soccer starts.

Nearing the ranch there were lots of people fishing the lakes.

After my break, I was able to catch up with the group. We kept a decent pace and were at the ranch 7:30am. It was time for some good breakfast and watching the world cup. I did not have that much interest towards the game, but watched it with others. Obviously, concentrating on eating. After the brekkie I had a shower, did my laundry and tried to catch up with the blog. That went pretty well, but socialising with fellow hikers made it slow. I saw Auston at the ranch, which was a bit surprising considering his speed. But then again, he has taken a lot of leave from the trail.

Having the brekkie at the ranch.

I ate the double lunch at the runch, which consisted of two delicious vegetarian hamburgers. Having not decided whether to stay for the night at the ranch made the day a bit restless. I needed to deal with my shoes. Order new ones and then fix the old ones to last a bit longer. As I pushed doing this towards the evening, I decided finally to stay for the night. Eating the dinner, 4 servings of spaghetti, reinforced this decision.

I ordered Hoka One One Stinson 4 trailrunners from RunnersWarehouse, to be delivered at Castella General Store. They promised one day delivery, and Castella was 2.5 days away. Fixing my shoes did not go well. I could not get the needle through the plastic part of the shoe, and when I tried to glue the bottoms of the shoes, the glue tube exploded on my left hand. Being superglue, it dried instantly and I could not wash it off. The glue made the fingers a bit stiff, but would propably wear off in few days max.

It did not feel like the right choice to stay at the ranch. It was 12 dollars to camp at the yard, and the presence of many other hikers made it a restless place to camp. The ranch is a wonderfull place but camping makes little sense if you plan to leave the first thing in the morning. I set up my cowboy camp in a bit of a distress mood while somebody was doing stuff till late with the bright setting of his head lamp. It was ear plug time.
