2018.07.11 - Day #62 - Failing town visit

To PCT mile 1315.8 (stats here).

Like it has been a habbit of mine, I did not sleep well in the town. There was noise from the road, the railroads and the fan. I got up at six when the other people where leaving to continue the hike. I would need to wait for the post delivery until 7:30am.

Yet another wonderful trail angel, Brenda from Little Haven.

I tried to make some American pancakes from the powder mix, failing miserably. The muffins and water melon that Brenda (the hosting trail angel) provided were great. Unluckily, the post delivery was very late, and came around 11am. And my package was not there. I waited for nothing, and now it was the hottest time of the day. Well, at least I was able to snooze a bit.

My hike started with a long ascend from Belden, some 5000 feet during 13 miles. The beginning was excrutiating. No shade, no wind, temperature too high actually to even want to know the exact number. I was happy to accept the shade from the canopy after some 5 miles. There were many creeks along the way and I took the habbit of splashing water to my face and getting my hat and gloves wet. Did not take that much time to dry, but helped immensly for a moment and boosted morale.

Starting the hard ascend, river lingering beside the elevated trail.

I went up like a snail. But once in shade, my mood got better and I decided I would for once hike really late and see if I could make the now standard 30 miles. There was not many people doing the climbing during this hour. I saw a duo from Seattle, the Boyscouts, and a girl from California, Popcorn. I kept leap frogging them a few times and exchanged some words. Socialising saves otherwise a boring day.

The latest hour of hiking so far.

Once the heavy climbing was done, the terrain changed and was easy to travel. Towards the evening, the temperature got cooler and my mood improved even more. Having my coffee choco and putting some good music and it was not a problem at all to keep hiking until 11:15pm. It was completely dark then. There was a stretch without water before the tent site and I still needed to get some from a steep 0.3 mile side trail. Without a pack it felt like a luxury the get the water. I ate my dinner in the dark with good moods and went to sleep 00:30am. The latest so far while at trail.
