2018.09.11 - Day #124 - Zero at the end of the road

No PCT miles.

I could not sleep that well during the night. The floor was too hard to keep sleeping on my side so I changed positions all the time. Whenever I get to sleep on my back, you usually snore. Whenever this happened, Simon woke me up in order to make me stop snoring. I thought that this is fair enough. It is better than 3 people get to sleep versus just one.

I got up 6:30am the same time as others. The other three were getting back to the trail head right at the start of the day. I was planning to stay at the hotel until the check out time, and just hang out at the front of the store. I used the hours at the hotel to clean and arrange my stuff, and selecting photos to the blog. Stehekin has poor wifi options and you needed to buy access to one even in the hotel. It used satellite connection and was pretty crappy, I heard. I ended up not buying it at all.

Most hikers ended up using the ferry when coming from Holden Village to Stehekin. That skipped some 20 miles of the trail. I rather ended up destroying my feet instead.

After I checked out from the hotel, I went for my packages. The food resupply box was there but the mystery box from my sister had not arrived. This was too bad but no wonder as the mail does not travel that well to these small places, especially international mail. I went and did my laundry, and then studied the contents of the hiker box which was located near the shore side, next to trashcans. Facepalm was there among other hikers, and donated some surplus food to me. I was happy to accept as I needed to eat something during my zero and did not feel to urge to use the expensive restaurant. I did take the bakery's free shuttle to the famous Bakery and bought some vegetarian pizza, a sandwich and buns. They were pretty good but maybe still not quite worth the reputation.

The river following the road from Stehekin to High Bridge Ranger Station. I like the colors!

My intention was to catch up with the blog during the day but I did poor progress. The terrace of the restaurant was a poor place to do that as it was full of hikers and you kept socialising and being interrupted all the time. I decided that I would take the last bus today to the trail head, and camp there at the Ranger Station without doing any hiking. That would put me in a position where I could resume hiking as a first thing the next morning. When I made this decision, my time window for the blog shortened more and I resolved not to even try but just leisurely hang out.

Who needs expensive hotels when you can get a roof on top of your head for free!

The bus departed 5:30pm towards the trail head. You needed to get a permit here for camping, so I had acquired that from the visitor centre. The campground was a tidy place, with a shelter, outhouse, fire ring and picnic tables. Six other hikers joined me there camping, and we all ended up sleeping under the shelter. It was fun to socialise with the youngsters before hitting the sack.
